15 Craft Projects For Adults

a craft project for adults - flowers made out of fabric

Whether you’re a lifelong crafter, or a lockdown hobbyist with no intentions of slowing down, craft projects for adults are a fun and simple way to get creative at home. You can create something beautiful or practical, something to keep or something to gift your loved ones, and be proud with the knowledge that you have made something with your own two hands.

At Discount Fabrics, we are a family of seasoned crafters. Our craft fabrics are suitable for a diverse range of projects, and our handiwork enthusiasts have put them to the test many times. We are online fabric retail specialists, so not only are we great at getting you the best fabric at the best price, but we’re also great at thinking of things that you can do with it. That’s why we’ve created this post, to share our favourite craft projects for adults. No matter how long you’ve been crafting, what your skill-level is or what materials you have available, there is guaranteed to be something on this list that you can try your hand at.

And if you do try one of our projects, let us know! We’d love to see, and support, your newest creations.

15 Craft Projects For Adults

Our 15 craft projects for adults would make the perfect addition to your summer bucket list. Whether you’re looking for something easy, or something a bit more advanced, we’ve got you covered.

A Cuddle Pillow

Ready for the ultimate lazy Sunday? A cuddle pillow is soft, warm and the perfect addition to a lazy day. From watching films to reading books, you can do it all nestled in the comfort of a home-made cuddle pillow, and relish in both the comfort of the pillow and the satisfaction of making it yourself. We would personally recommend a Super Velvet fabric. Available in a range of colours, you are sure to find a shade that complements your room of choice, and so your cuddle pillow can take pride of place on your sofa or bed without compromising the decor.

Jar Covers

Everybody loves a mason jar, and the only way to make your glass collection cuter is by crafting your own covers. You have a few options here, because you can make fabric covers for the outside or fabric lids for the top. Both are pretty and practical (so why not do both?). The kind of fabrics you use will depend on the purpose of the mason jar. Is it there as decoration? Then the world’s your oyster – why not go for a bold and bright Buzzy Bee Cotton Print or a soft and gentle Floral Cotton Print?

Lanyards

Does someone you love have a job where they constantly need to present their ID? Why not make them a trendy lanyard, and stop them from having to search through their pockets every day? Not only are lanyards really easy to make, but they’re also really practical. They’re used by students of all ages, by NHS workers and even by volunteers – so chances are, this would be the perfect gift for someone you know, as well as a great test of your crafting skills. This is a craft project for adults that will benefit all of your friends too!

A Camera Strap

This one is very similar to a lanyard, except your camera strap will need to hold considerably more weight. This is because cameras are surprisingly chunky, especially if you have a professional make and model. If you have any budding photographers in your friendship group, this is the perfect present for them, even more so because it is homemade. As it needs to be durable, we would recommend using a fabric such as the Bi Stretch. Of medium weight, it has the flexibility to support a camera. Plus, it comes in a range of colours – the Flo Green would look particularly nice.

Bookmarks

You can never have too many bookmarks, especially with how easy they are to make. This means that they are the ultimate craft project for adults, because you can have bookmarks for every season, if that’s what tickles your fancy. We’ve even seen people make bookmarks to match the book they’re currently reading. For example, The Outsider by Stephen King boasts a fluorescent orange cover. Why not match it with an equally vibrant Lifestyle Cotton fabric?

A Toy

This is a slightly more advanced craft project, especially if you want to make a really detailed toy. However, there is nothing sweeter than presenting a homemade bear to your first grandchild and so it is definitely a task worth pursuing. Other stuffed toy ideas include: a lamb, a duck, an octopus and a frog. As long as it’s cute and cuddly, you really can’t go wrong.

Roses

Romance never dies, and neither will this rose! Picking the perfect shade of fabric will allow you to recreate the most symbolic flower on the market – we’re thinking deep reds and blushing pinks. A homemade flower is the perfect gift to present to your girlfriend, boyfriend, wife or husband, as a token of your love.

Cord Tidier

We all love a tidy house, and there’s nothing worse than having stray wires making a mess in the corner of an otherwise spotless room. A cord tidier can keep them neatly tied together or, even better, out of sight and out of mind. Making your own cord tidier takes this one step further, as it enables you to use a gorgeous fabric that ties into your room’s decor. Our Polycotton blend comes in so many colours that you are sure to find a shade that perfectly complements the room – from Airforce Blue to Pale Lemon, we’ve got you.

Headbands

Not only is this a cute accessory, but it is a much-needed addition to any summer day. A headband can help you to keep your hair out of your face and off of your neck, making you considerably cooler; with the state of the weather lately, we need all of the help that we can get. Headbands also offer a really great opportunity to expand your craft project. Once you’ve made the headband itself, you can then add accessories to give it an extra dimension. Flowers, buttons and feathers are all really great suggestions that are guaranteed to turn heads.

Seasonal Decorations

Christmas, Easter, New Years, St George’s Day, Hanukkah, Diwali, Harvest – no matter what you’re celebrating, or what season it is, there is guaranteed to be a perfect craft project for adults with your name on it. Some suggestions, that we personally love, include:

  • Eggs
  • Baubles
  • Mistletoe
  • Green hearts
  • Corn

It’s your chance to get creative, and use your imagination to its fullest. Who knows what you’ll craft!

A Mobile

Over the years we have seen some lovely baby mobiles, and they make fantastic craft projects because they can be as simple or as complex as you like. Some people choose to adopt a storybook theme, while others choose to use characters from tv and film, and others still choose to make an intensely personal piece. No matter which you prefer, there is guaranteed to be a range of fabrics available that will help you to bring your vision to life. For example, a Unicorn Anti Polar Fleece Fabric would be perfect if you are expecting a baby girl, while the Disney Pixar Cars 100% Cotton would be great for anyone looking to recreate the movie.

A Face Mask

We’d be remiss if we didn’t suggest it – especially if you’ve read one of our earlier blog posts, How To Make A Cotton Face Mask. While we’re no longer in lockdown and restrictions are easing, a face mask is still very much a necessity – and so why not make your own? Use a fun fabric and you’ll stand out across the shopping centre, restaurant or wherever else you’re going to show off your latest adult craft project. Plus, it is definitely much cheaper than buying single-use masks.

Envelopes

We might be showing our age with this one! While sending letters isn’t as popular as it used to be, a fabric envelope crafted with love is the perfect touch to any long-distance correspondence. It’s something else for you to talk about, as well as a signal that you enjoy the other person’s presence in your life.

A Cosy

Calling all tea drinkers, we know you’re out there! A cosy is the perfect way to avoid burning your fingers, and can be used both inside of your home and on the go, which means that you’ll get maximum use out of this project. An Anti Polar Animal Skin Fabric could be just what you need to add a bit of the wild to your day. And you’re guaranteed to receive compliments no matter where you are, whether it’s from your neighbour popping round for a coffee or from your barista when you pop into a cafe for some much needed peace and a brownie.

A Rug

Our final suggestion is by far the most advanced craft project for adults on our list! However, the complexities are most definitely worth it, as a handmade rug would be the piece de resistance in any room of the house. Whether you need a showpiece, or something to pull the room together, there is so much that you can have fun with, to truly make it your own. And best of all, it doesn’t matter if something is spilled on it – because the fun is priceless, and if it gets ruined, you get to do it all over again!
