Hop into Spring and Transform Your Home with Easter Decorations

Spring is a time of renewal and joy, and what better way to celebrate the season than by adorning your home with vibrant Easter decorations? As the sun starts to come out and the flowers start to bloom, it’s the perfect opportunity to infuse your living space with the spirit of Easter.

Whether you are a seasoned crafter, or just looking for some easy festive inspiration, there are endless possibilities for Easter décor. In this article, we recommend our favourite springtime fabric choices for 2024 and outline some easy easter crafts to brighten your home.

Traditional Easter decorations

Celebrated worldwide, Easter has some recognisable symbols used widely throughout themed decorations. From colourful eggs and adorable bunnies to daffodils and tulips, these decorations play a significant role in announcing the arrival of Spring and, more traditionally, commemorating the resurrection of Christ.

In Norway, homes are traditionally decorated with colourful Easter chickens known as ‘Påskekyllinger’. Here, Easter celebrations are marked by the artful decoration of eggs, using vibrant colours and traditional patterns.

Meanwhile, in Brazil, there is a longstanding tradition of gifting chocolate eggs of every size and type. As a traditionally Catholic country, Brazil’s ‘Pascoa’ festivities often blend religious ceremonies with cultural flair, featuring long-standing traditions such as weaving crosses from palm branches and decorating roads with colourful festive patterns.

Decorating your home for this holiday season not only adds some festive visual appeal but also infuses it with warmth and joy to welcome the changing season.

Fabric Easter eggs

Create charming fabric Easter eggs to add a cosy and colourful touch to your festive décor. These fabric eggs can be displayed in a decorative bowl, hung from branches, or stylishly presented.

Additional Materials Needed

Optional Materials

Step 1: Prepare the fabric

  • Begin by selecting your desired fabric for the Easter eggs. We recommend choosing colourful and patterned fabrics for a festive spring look, such as this Buzzy Bees print, or Floral print.
  • Cut four identical egg shapes from the fabric, ensuring they are large enough to accommodate your desired egg size.
    • For a Large Easter Egg size, aim for dimensions of approximately 8 inches (20cm) tall, and 5 inches (13cm) wide.
    • For a Small Easter Egg size, aim for dimensions of approximately 4 inches (10cm) tall, and 2.5 inches (6.5cm) wide.

Step 2: Add wadding

  • Place one fabric egg shape on a flat surface, right side facing down.
  • Cut a piece of wadding slightly smaller than the fabric egg shape.
  • Place the wadding on top of the fabric egg shape, aligning it evenly.

Step 3: Attach the second fabric egg shape

  • Place the second fabric egg shape on top of the wadding, right side facing up.
  • Ensure the edges of both fabric pieces align perfectly.

Step 4: Secure the layers

  • Use pins to secure the layers together, especially around the curved edges of the egg shape.

Step 5: Sew or glue around the edges

  • If using a sewing machine, carefully stitch around the edges of the fabric egg shape, leaving a small opening at the bottom.
  • If sewing by hand, use a needle and thread to sew around the edges, leaving a small opening for turning.

Step 6: Turn the egg right side out

  • Carefully turn the fabric egg right side out through the opening.
  • Use a pencil or chopstick to gently push out the edges and curves of the egg shape, ensuring it is fully inverted.

Step 7: Stuff the egg

  • Fill the fabric egg with wadding or stuffing to give it a plump and rounded appearance.
  • Add enough stuffing to achieve your desired level of fullness.

Step 8: Close the opening

  • Use a needle and thread to hand-stitch the opening closed, ensuring the stitches are neat and secure.
  • Alternatively, you can use craft glue to seal the opening shut, applying a thin line of glue along the edges and pressing them together firmly.

Step 9: Optional embellishments

  • Get creative and add decorative embellishments to your fabric Easter egg, such as ribbons, buttons, or sequins!
  • Use craft glue to attach the embellishments securely to the surface of the egg.

Step 10: Display your fabric Easter egg

  • Once the glue is dry and any additional embellishments are added, your fabric Easter egg is ready to be displayed!
  • You could place it in a decorative bowl, nestle it among other Easter decorations, or hang it from branches for a whimsical touch.

Fabric bunny treat bags

Additional Materials Needed

Optional Materials

  • Fabric glue
  • Mini Pom Pom
  • Googly eyes
  • Sharpie (for decoration)

Step 1: Prepare the fabric

  • Begin by choosing your desired texture for the Easter treat bags. Linen, hessian, and cotton fabrics can work well for this project. We also recommend choosing colourful, or patterned fabrics for the ears for a whimsical look.
  • Cut two rectangular pieces and two identical ear shapes from your chosen fabric for the bag’s body.
  • Cut two identical ear shapes from your chosen patterned/coloured fabric, which will be used for the inner ears.
    • For the bunny ears, aim for dimensions around 6 inches x 3 inches (15cm x 7.5cm).
    • For the bag body, aim for dimensions around 8 inches x 6 inches (20cm x 15cm).

Step 2: Sew the bunny ears

  • Match the inner and outer ear shapes and place the right sides together.
  • Sew along the edges using a 1/4 inch seam allowance, and make sure to leave the bottom open.
  • Trim any access fabric off, if needed.
  • Turn the ears right side out and press them flat with an iron.
  • Repeat for the other two ear pieces.

Step 3: Assemble the bag body

  • Place one rectangular piece of fabric for the bag body, right side up.
  • Position the bunny ears on top of the bag body fabric, with the inner ear fabric facing upwards and the outer ear fabric facing downwards.
  • Place the second rectangular piece of fabric for the bag body on top, right side down, sandwiching the ears between the two layers. Make sure the edges match up.
  • Sew around the edges, leaving the top open.

Step 4: Turn the bag right side out

  • Turn the bag right side out through the opening.
  • Press with an iron to flatten the seams.

Step 5: Create the bag opening

  • Fold down the top edge of the bag and sew along the fold to create a hem. Aim for a 1/2-inch hem width.

Step 6: Attach decorative embellishments

  • Use fabric glue or stitch by hand to attach pom-poms or googly eyes to the front of the bag to create bunny faces.
  • Alternatively, create fun faces/expressions using a Sharpie directly on the bag.

Step 7: Add ribbon or twine closure

  • Cut a piece of ribbon or twine to your desired length, depending on how you want to close the bag.
  • Thread the ribbon or twine through the top of the bag and tie the ends together securely to create a drawstring closure.

Step 8: Fill your bunny treat bags!

  • Once the glue is dry and any additional embellishments are added, your fabric bunny treat bags are ready to be filled with some Easter goodies!
  • These bags will be perfect for Easter egg hunts, party favours, or simply adding a touch of charm to your festive celebrations.
