The Holy Month

Understanding Ramadan

"The month of Ramadan in which was revealed the Qur'an — a guidance for the people."

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar — a 29 to 30 day period of fasting, prayer, reflection and community. It is observed by approximately 1.8 billion Muslims worldwide, making it one of the most widely practised spiritual traditions on earth.

From dawn (Fajr) to sunset (Maghrib), Muslims fast from food, drink and all that distracts from worship. But Ramadan is far more than a fast — it is a season of heightened generosity, deeper devotion, and intentional giving.

This year, Ramadan 2026 is expected to begin around Saturday 28 February, concluding with the joyful celebration of Eid al-Fitr in late March.

The Key Practices of Ramadan

01

Suhoor

The pre-dawn meal before Fajr prayer. A moment of quiet nourishment and intention before the fast begins — families often gather together in the early hours.

02

Iftar

Breaking the fast at sunset — traditionally with dates and water. A deeply communal experience where families and communities come together daily.

03

Tarawih Prayers

Special night prayers performed after Isha in congregation. The entire Qur'an is often recited through the month — a profoundly moving experience.

04

Sadaqah

Voluntary charity beyond Zakat. Ramadan is the season of generosity — acts of giving, food drives and kindness multiply greatly in spiritual reward.

05

Laylat al-Qadr

The Night of Power in the last 10 nights — believed to be better than a thousand months. Believers spend these nights in intense prayer and worship.

06

Eid al-Fitr

The joyful festival marking the end of Ramadan. New outfits, festive meals, gifts for loved ones — Eid is the wonderful celebration the month builds toward.

1

Choose a Base Fabric

Pick 1–2 metres of a beautiful fabric — linen, cotton poplin, viscose or satin. Choose colours meaningful to the recipient.

2

Add a Dressmaking Pattern

Include a Butterick or dressmaking pattern suited to the fabric — a modest dress, kurti or wide-leg trouser pattern is always appreciated.

3

Include the Finishing Touches

Add Gütermann thread in a matching shade, sewing needles, and decorative ribbon for the bow on top.

4

Wrap It Beautifully

Place everything in a hessian or jute bag tied with satin ribbon — a fully sustainable, beautiful and uniquely personal Eid gift.
