Discover one of the most versatile and durable textiles in the crafting world with our premium 100% Cotton Calico Fabric. Unlike fully processed craft cottons, calico retains a slightly heavier, plainer weave, making it exceptionally strong, breathable, and easy to handle.
A standout feature of our calico is its generous 60-inch (150cm) extra-wide finish. This provides significantly more fabric per metre than standard rolls, making it incredibly cost-effective for large-scale projects, seamless quilt backings, and bulk dressmaking.
Why Choose Our Calico?
-
The “Natural” Finish: Our Natural colourway is unbleached and partially processed, retaining the beautiful, organic cotton husks within the weave for an authentic rustic look.
-
Extra Wide (60″): Exceptional value for money that reduces the need for joining seams on large projects.
-
150 GSM Medium Weight: Sturdy enough to hold its shape, yet lightweight enough to sew effortlessly on a standard domestic machine.
-
Oeko-Tex Standard 100 Certified: Tested to be free from harmful substances, ensuring it is safe for all crafting and clothing applications.
Ideal Uses
-
Dressmaking Toiles (Mock-ups): The absolute gold standard for fashion students and designers creating prototype garments (toiles) on a dress form before cutting into expensive final fabrics.
-
Tote Bags & Accessories: The strong, durable weave is perfect for crafting reusable shopping bags, aprons, and structured pouches.
-
Embroidery & Printing: The smooth, stable surface takes screen printing, block printing, and hand embroidery beautifully.
-
Home Décor: Excellent for rustic pillowcases, curtain linings, and upholstery base layers.

Expert Sewing Tips for Calico
-
Always Pre-Wash: Because calico is a minimally processed natural fiber, it will shrink on its first wash (sometimes up to 5-10%). Always pre-wash and dry your calico exactly as you plan to wash the finished item before you start cutting.
-
Ironing: Calico can hold a crease well, which is great for pressing seams! Use a hot iron with plenty of steam to smooth it out after pre-washing.
-
Finishing Edges: Calico can fray at the raw edges due to its plain weave. If you are making an unlined item like a tote bag, finish your seams with a zig-zag stitch, an overlocker, or use French seams for a professional look.
