Premium 100% Cotton Velvet Fabric | Luxurious Soft Pile (44″ Wide)

£11.98 Metre

Experience the unmatched luxury of our Premium 100% Cotton Velvet Fabric. Unlike cheaper polyester alternatives which can look shiny and plastic, this authentic cotton velvet has a rich, deep colour and a sophisticated matte finish.

Because it is woven from natural plant fibres, this fabric is breathable and soft against the skin, making it the ultimate choice for high-end dressmaking, evening wear, and historical costumes.

Why Choose Cotton Velvet?

  • 100% Natural Fibres: Perfect for those with sensitive skin or for garments that need to breathe.

  • Rich Colour Depth: Cotton absorbs dye deeper than synthetics, resulting in stunningly intense shades—from Royal Blue to Emerald Green.

  • Soft & Durable: Features a plush, dense pile that feels incredible to the touch but is durable enough for long-lasting wear.

  • Beautiful Drape: It has a natural weight and structure, making it perfect for tailored garments.

Ideal Uses

  • Dressmaking: The 44″ width is perfect for sewing structured jackets, waistcoats, evening gowns, and A-line skirts.

  • Costume Design: A favourite for historical reenactments, theatre costumes, and capes.

  • Small Upholstery: Ideal for luxury cushion covers, bolster pillows, and lining jewellery boxes.

  • Accessories: Create stunning bows, hairbands, and clutches.

Expert Tips for Sewing Velvet

  • Watch the Nap: Velvet has a “direction.” Run your hand over the fabric; one way feels smooth, the other feels rough. Ensure all your pattern pieces are cut facing the same direction (usually with the nap running down) so the colour looks consistent.

  • Don’t Crush It: Never iron velvet directly on the face! It will crush the pile and leave permanent marks. Steam it from the back or use a “Velvet Board” / fluffy towel underneath.

  • Prevent Creeping: Velvet layers love to slide against each other. Use plenty of pins or a Walking Foot on your sewing machine to keep layers even.
