Expert Tips for Sewing Velvet

Watch the Nap: Velvet has a “direction.” Run your hand over the fabric; one way feels smooth, the other feels rough. Ensure all your pattern pieces are cut facing the same direction (usually with the nap running down) so the colour looks consistent.
Don’t Crush It: Never iron velvet directly on the face! It will crush the pile and leave permanent marks. Steam it from the back or use a “Velvet Board” / fluffy towel underneath.
Prevent Creeping: Velvet layers love to slide against each other. Use plenty of pins or a Walking Foot on your sewing machine to keep layers even.
