Expert Sewing & Upholstery Tips for Velvet

1. Important Upholstery Note: This fabric does not have a Fire Retardant (FR) backing. If you plan to use it to upholster fixed domestic furniture (like a sofa or armchair), UK law requires you to use a fire-retardant barrier cloth (interliner) underneath to comply with safety regulations.

2. Nap Direction: Velvet has a “nap” (a directional pile). It will look darker from one angle and lighter from another. When making curtains or garments, ensure you cut all your pattern pieces with the nap running in the same direction (usually smoothing downwards).

3. Pressing: Never iron velvet directly on the right side, as you will crush the beautiful pile! Use a steamer, or press gently from the reverse side over a fluffy towel.
