Why Denim, Why Now
Coloured Denim Is
Having Its Moment
Coloured denim is everywhere on the high street in 2026 — but mass-market versions use cheap blended fibres that fade fast and pill after a few washes. Our brand-new mid-weight Coloured Denim is 100% cotton, so it holds its colour, keeps its shape, and handles beautifully on a domestic machine.
The challenge? Denim is dense. Needles bend, seams pucker, and your machine can protest. This guide gives you the techniques that make the difference between a jacket that looks homemade and one that looks handmade.
And this month only — 15% off the entire Coloured Denim range. So there's really no better time to cut into it.
Quick Fabric Stats
- Mid-weight — perfect for structured garments
- 100% cotton — breathable, washable, colour-fast

The Guide
4 Techniques That
Change Everything
Apply these in order — each one builds on the last and together they deliver professional results from your very first cut.
Use the Right Needle — Every Time
A standard universal needle will bend or skip stitches in heavy denim. You need a denim/jeans needle (90/14 or 100/16). The sharp reinforced tip slices cleanly through tightly woven fibres instead of forcing through them. Replace the needle at the start of every project — a blunt needle is the single biggest cause of skipped stitches in thick fabrics.
Needle: Denim 90/14 – 100/16Lengthen Your Stitch
Heavy woven fabrics need room to breathe. Set your stitch length to 3mm – 3.5mm — longer than your standard 2.5mm setting. A longer stitch reduces fabric drag, stops material being pulled down into the feed dogs, and gives a much cleaner finish on topstitching. On a denim jacket, topstitching is everything — so this one really matters.
Stitch Length: 3mm – 3.5mmTame Bulky Seams at Cross Points
Where multiple seams meet — at the yoke, side seams, cuffs — you get a thick stack of layers that can stop your machine. Before sewing over them, hammer seams flat with a tailor's clapper (or a rolling pin). For the thickest intersections, use a hump jumper / jean-a-ma-jig to keep the presser foot level and eliminate skipped stitches completely.
Tool: Tailor's Clapper + Hump JumperPress Every Seam Before the Next
The step most people skip — and it shows in the finished jacket. Press each seam open or to the side with a hot iron and a damp cloth before attaching the next piece. Denim holds a pressed fold better than almost any other fabric, keeping construction flat and accurate throughout. Your topstitching lines will be dramatically cleaner for it.

Tools That Make
Denim Easier
You don't need expensive kit — just the right kit. These six are worth having in your sewing room before you cut a single piece.
Denim Needle
90/14 or 100/16. Non-negotiable. Replace at the start of every new project without exception.
Topstitching Thread
Heavier weight than standard thread. Gives you that authentic, prominent denim stitch look.
Tailor's Clapper
Presses bulky seams completely flat before topstitching. A wooden block works in a pinch.
Hump Jumper
Levels the presser foot over thick seam intersections. Eliminates skipped stitches at the worst spots.
Sharp Fabric Scissors
Dull blades drag and distort cut edges. Keep a dedicated pair for fabric only — never paper.
Seam Ripper
Denim is unforgiving of mistakes. Keep one close — but with these tips, you won't need it often.
