Harry Potter Cotton — Clearance
Zip Pencil Case
Two rectangles, a zip, a lining. Back-to-school ready in under an hour. The most useful thing a kid can make.

Beginner
Cut two rectangles 22×16cm (outer + lining). Sew zip between layers on long edges. Open zip, sew remaining three sides leaving a lining gap. Turn, press, slip-stitch gap closed.

Disney / Mickey Mouse Cotton — Clearance
Bias-Bound Tote Bag
No zip, no lining. A polka dot bias binding trim on the top edge makes it look finished and professional. Teaches the skill used on every project after this.

One rectangle 80×40cm. Fold, sew side seams, box the corners. Apply bias binding to the top opening. Add two fabric handles, topstitched and folded.

Fastest project on the list. Mix 3mm and 7mm polka dot prints — they coordinate without matching. Done in half an hour.

Cut double-layer triangles (20cm base × 22cm height), fold right sides out, press. Slot into open bias tape at regular intervals, stitch tape shut in one pass.

Mini Envelope Cushion
No zip, no buttons — two overlapping back panels create the closure. A 30cm cushion pad slips straight in.

Front panel 35cm sq. Two back panels 35×22cm — hem one long edge each. Stack right sides down on front, hemmed edges overlapping. Sew all round, clip corners, turn.

Any Clearance Scrap + Bias Binding
Bias-Bound Bookmark
Uses scraps from the other four projects. No raw edges, no turning. The one kids can do almost entirely on their own.

Complete Beginner
Cut scrap 18×5cm. Optional: sandwich thin card for stiffness. Encase all four edges in bias binding, mitring corners. Machine stitch the binding on.

Tips for Sewing with Beginners
The make goes better when the adult does less.
Adult cuts, child sews
Pre-cut everything before sitting down. Cutting frustration kills momentum.
Masking tape seam guide
Tape a strip 1cm from the needle. Keep the fabric edge against it — instant straight seams.
Slow the machine
Use the speed limiter. Slow machines produce straight seams. Fast machines produce wonky ones and scared kids.
Adult irons, always
Pressing every seam is what makes the finish look professional. The iron is an adult tool for under-12s.
Finish one before starting another
Completion builds motivation. A pile of half-finished projects does the opposite.
Let them choose the fabric
Children who pick their own print stay at the machine until it's done. The licensed character fabrics exist for exactly this.
Most Common Mistake
Pulling the fabric as it feeds. The machine does the feeding — the child steers. Teach this first.
