How to Sew a Reversible Autumn-to-Christmas Table Runner with Jacquard & Festive Cotton
How to Sew a Reversible Autumn-to-Christmas Table Runner with Jacquard & Festive Cotton
One runner, two looks. A woven Jacquard on top for autumn, a Christmas print underneath for December, and one flip on the first of the month to change the whole table.
What this guide covers
From picking the pair to the final press.
Why a reversible runner earns its keep from October to January
Most seasonal table linen comes out for three weeks in December and spends the rest of the year in a drawer. A reversible runner covers four months of the year with one piece of sewing, because you never have to swap it out, only turn it over.
Rich woven texture for harvest suppers and cosy autumn evenings.
Still seasonal, still smart, and it sits happily under candles and gourds.
One turn and the table is festive, with no new decor to buy or store.
Turn it over again for a calm winter table once the decorations come down.
Half the storage
One folded runner replaces an autumn runner and a Christmas runner in the linen cupboard.
A sturdier result
Two layers bound together lie flatter and resist wrinkling far better than a single hemmed strip.
A gift that fits anyone
No sizing and no guesswork. Make two and the second one is a ready-made Christmas present.
Choosing a Jacquard and a Christmas cotton that pair
Jacquard has its pattern woven into the cloth rather than printed on top, which gives it body, texture and a quiet richness that suits a table. The trick is choosing a Christmas print that sits comfortably against it when the binding shows on both sides.
Find one shared colour
Pick a shade that appears in both fabrics. That colour becomes your binding, and it ties the two sides together at the edge.
Let one side be busy
A detailed Jacquard pairs best with a simple Christmas print, and a bold festive print with a tonal Jacquard. Two loud sides fight.
Match the weight sensibly
Jacquard is the heavier fabric and does the structural work. A quilting-weight cotton underneath keeps the runner flat without adding bulk.

Cutting and sewing step by step
This method layers the two fabrics wrong sides together and finishes the edges with binding, so both faces stay clean and the runner turns over without a seam on show.
Press and square both fabrics
Press the Jacquard and the cotton flat first, then trim one end square against a ruler so every measurement starts from a true edge.
Cut both panels the same size
Cut the Jacquard and the Christmas cotton to identical rectangles. Run any directional print along the length so it reads the right way up the table.
Layer wrong sides together
Lay the cotton face down, add the wadding if you are using it, then the Jacquard face up on top. Smooth out from the centre towards the edges.
Pin or clip, then baste the edges
Clip around the outside and stitch 5mm from the edge all the way round so the layers cannot shift while you bind.
Add a few holding lines
Stitch two or three straight lines down the length, following a line in the Jacquard pattern so the stitching disappears on the top side.
Trim and square the edges
Trim all four sides so the layers line up exactly. Straight, even edges are what make the binding look professional.
Jacquard can fray quickly once it is cut because the pattern threads float across the back. Handle the cut pieces as little as possible, and baste the edges as soon as the layers are together rather than leaving them overnight.
Binding the edges
On a reversible runner the binding is visible on both sides, so it does more than tidy the edge. It is the frame for both looks, and a colour that appears in both fabrics pulls the whole piece together.
How much binding to buy
Measure all four sides and add extra for the corners and the join.
Mitring the corners
- 1Open the binding and sew along the first fold line, stopping 6mm before the corner.
- 2Fold the binding up at 45 degrees, then back down level with the next edge.
- 3Start sewing again from the fold and repeat at every corner.
- 4Turn the binding to the other side and stitch it down, folding a neat diagonal at each corner.
Satin bias binding gives the Christmas side a festive sheen, while cotton bias binding sits more quietly against the Jacquard. If you want the runner to feel more autumnal than festive, choose cotton, and save the satin for a dedicated Christmas piece.
Care and pressing
A table runner sees candle wax, spilled gravy and the occasional red wine. Each fabric in it has its own needs, so care for the runner at the pace of the most delicate layer.
| Layer | Washing | Pressing | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jacquard | Spot clean first; gentle cool wash only if the care label allows | Wrong side, medium heat, pressing cloth | Floating threads on the back can snag in the machine |
| Christmas cotton | Cool wash, colours together | Medium heat on the reverse | Pre-wash dark reds before sewing in case of colour run |
| Metallic Lurex | Spot clean only where possible | Low heat, wrong side, always with a cloth | Direct heat can dull or melt the metallic yarn |
| Bias binding | Follows the gentlest layer above | Press with the main runner | Satin binding marks easily under a hot iron |
Store it rolled, not folded
Roll the runner around a cardboard tube with the side you will use next facing out. It comes out in January and October without crease lines, ready to go straight back on the table.
