The Art of Autumn Layering: How to Mix Denim, Faux Suede, and Liberty Cottons
The Art of Autumn Layering: Mixing Denim, Faux Suede & Liberty Cottons
Three textures, one confident autumn wardrobe. Here's how to combine soft Liberty florals with structured faux suede and coloured denim โ plus how to get every Liberty print sampled for free before you cut a single piece.

Why Multi-Texture Garments Define Autumn Style in the UK
British autumn dressing has always been about contrast โ soft against structured, print against plain. This September, that means pairing the softness of Liberty cotton with the body of faux suede and denim.
A single-fabric outfit reads flat once the weather turns. Autumn layering works because each fabric does a different job: Liberty cotton carries the print and the softness against skin, faux suede adds structure and warmth as an outer layer, and coloured denim brings a utility edge that holds its shape through the day.
The trick is proportion, not matching. One hero fabric per outfit, with the other two playing a supporting role in a lining, a collar, or a trim. That's the difference between a considered autumn outfit and a costume.
- Liberty Lasenby cotton โ the soft base layer, best as a blouse, dress, or jacket lining
- Faux suede โ the structured outer layer, ideal for pinafores, shackets, and utility skirts
- Coloured denim โ the utility layer, best for jackets and structured separates that need to hold shape
- All three sold by the metre, so you can test a small cut before committing to a full garment
The Freedom to Sample โ How to Order Free Liberty Swatches
Every Liberty fabric sample is 100% free this September โ a genuine zero-risk way to check colour, drape, and print scale against your pattern before ordering yardage.
Order two or three Liberty samples side by side rather than one at a time. Wiltshire Shadow, Summer Fair, and Arthur's Garden all read differently next to faux suede than they do on their own โ seeing them together makes the final choice much easier.
The Faux Suede Pinafore
A structured pinafore is the easiest way to introduce faux suede into an autumn wardrobe โ it layers straight over a Liberty blouse and needs no fitted tailoring.
Faux suede behaves differently to woven cotton โ it doesn't fray, so raw edges can be left unfinished on facings and hems, but it does drag under a standard needle. Switch to a microtex or leather needle before you start, and lengthen your stitch slightly to stop the fabric puckering along the seams.
Cut pattern pieces in a single layer rather than folded, since faux suede has a directional nap that can catch the light differently if pieces are cut facing opposite ways. Pin only within the seam allowance โ pin holes are permanent on faux suede โ or use clips instead.
A regular universal needle will skip stitches and drag the nap on faux suede. Swap to a size 90 microtex needle and test on a scrap first โ you should see clean, even stitches with no visible drag marks.
The Lined Denim Jacket
Coloured denim gives structure to an outer layer, but a plain lining wastes the chance to hide a print detail. Line the jacket in a Liberty Lasenby floral instead.
Choose a mid-weight coloured denim with a little structure so the jacket holds its shape at the collar and cuffs. Press seams open as you go โ denim is forgiving, but a pressed seam is what gives the finished jacket a ready-to-wear look rather than a homemade one.
A Liberty print lining turns the inside of a plain jacket into the detail people notice when it's worn open. Cut the lining pieces from the same pattern as the shell, minus seam allowance at the hem for a clean turned finish.
Liberty Lasenby cotton is lighter than denim, so it will always feel slightly looser inside the shell โ that's expected and gives the jacket movement rather than stiffness. Baste the lining in place at the shoulder seams before final stitching to stop it shifting.
The Statement Detachable Faux Fur Collar
The fastest of the three projects โ a detachable faux fur collar adds a plush accent to either the pinafore or the denim jacket without committing to fur across a whole garment.
